Just like Ma Ingalls

As some of you may know I homeschool my three kiddos. We love to read and have been working our way thru The Little House On The Prairie series. Recently we finished reading By The Shore Of Silver Lake. There’s one chapter that describes Caroline making some sourdough Biscuits and sausage gravy. They described it so well that the kids asked if we could please look in our Little House cookbooks and make a batch. But their requests didn’t end there. They wanted to make it a challenge as well. They wanted to compare store bough canned biscuits to Ma Ingalls biscuits. And it’s no surprise that the from scratch sourdough biscuits won the challenge. Here’s an amazon link to the cookbook I found the recipe in. I’m sure now that we’ve dipped our toes into cooking like Ma Ingalls we will definitely be trying more recipes in the cookbook.

The more I homeschool (we are going on year 8 this year), the more I realize that schooling varies from day to day. We have our bookwork and written assignments to do for sure. But if you instil a little bit of fun with making a read a loud book come to life thru art projects and cooking, you will be teaching them many skills without them even realizing it. How to measure flour, how to measure liquids, how to measure butter etc just a few skills they picked up by making these biscuits and they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor in the process.

These are the sourdough Biscuits with sausage gravy on top.

Ginger Steak Salad

Today is another meal I tested out from my Pioneer Woman Cookbook. And this meal did not disappoint. I would serve this to guests, for a dinner party, for an at home date night or just for a regular night of the week when you wanted to eat and amazing meal. The best part about this meal is it’s not complicated but definitely tastes like something that should be serve an upscale restaurant. The ginger, the white wine vinegar, the brown sugar, the garlic in the marinate make this steak so flavourful and tender. Then you throw in the mixed greens with the green onions and cherry tomatoes it’s a winning combo for sure.

Now don’t you worry if you don’t have the cookbook I was luckily able to find a link to a very similar recipe, but I highly recommend you do purchase the cookbooks.

So what are you waiting for run to your kitchen and make this tonight 🙂

Back at it

So a while ago I had mentioned wanting to cook several recipes from my cookbook collection. Well this week I finally picked which cookbook author I would finally start with. It’s none other then Red Drummond recipes. I have all of her cookbooks and have acquired numerous recipes off her cooking show and website. So today I am going to introduce you to a delicious recipe my kids were so excited to try. I made Ree Drummond Cookies and cream Rolls, you can find the recipe here. Now I’m a little bit of a rule breaker when it comes to following recipes. So I should let you know that I actually made my dough in the bread machine using the dough cycle instead of following the steps listed in the recipe. I also may have misread the filling and mixed the crushed cookies in with the cream cheese filling. It didn’t matter though these were delicious and decadent. I would caution you thou if you don’t have big eaters in your house you may want to consider making the rolls a little smaller. My kids can eat a half of these amazing rolls at a time. Here’s a few pictures of the rolls thru the process. Trust me you want to give these a try they don’t disappoint.
