Day 3 post op

Well today is day three post op and I am starting to feel slightly human again. The pain was pretty intense on days 1-2 and I ended up back in the ER yesterday because my left side became swollen. We found out the swelling was probably from the IV fluids but we aren’t 100% sure. Thankfully this morning the swelling has gone down as well as the tingling in my face and leg.

Food wise I am not hungry at all but I have to get on my eating schedule so that I get all my vitamins and supplements in and get healed faster. I am not eating a lot of food at a time. I can manage about 1/2 cup of protein shake at a time and 1-2 tbsp of jello. I space the jello and shake at least 2-3 hours in between.

Today’s an exciting day for me cause I get to shower!!! I’m one of those people that likes to take at least one bath and one shower a day, and the last time I had a bath was right before heading to the hospital on Thursday morning. The first thing I’m going to do when the rest of the family wakes up is have breakfast with them then I’m going to have a nice warm shower.

I’m still pretty low on energy so I gotta go for now but will try and update you daily on how my recovery is going.

Surgery day

It’s ridiculously early but it’s surgery day!! I am excited, scared, happy, nervous I am all over the board right now. I feel like I’m going to throw up.  Last nights sleep was less the stellar but the good news is I’m getting knocked out for the surgery.

I have tons of thoughts going thru my head but I can’t seem to get them straight. I will post again as soon as I can.

When you can’t eat

I am starving today! So since I can’t put any of these foods in my mouth what do I do? I find recipes on Pinterest and bariatric sites. I know that I will get thru this phase and that I want to be prepared for my puree and soft food phase of this journey. The full liquid stage I’ve got sorted out.

So want to see some recipes I’m going to be trying? Here’s some links

I picked this one cause my birthday is 20 days post op

Checking in

Sorry I haven’t been blogging much. To be honest I’ve been trying to get organized and go to all my pre op appointments. As well as homeschool, workout and eat the pre op diet.

Since it’s taken me so long to finish this blog I am currently only four days away from surgery. How crazy is that! Tomorrow I have my final pre op appointment and then I have surgery bright and early on Thursday morning.

I will answer the question everyone is dying to know. How are you feeling? Well I am going thru a range or emotions. I’m excited, I’m scared, I’m thankful, I’m fearful and everything else in between.

I’m sure the closer I get to surgery the more I will freak out and get anxious but I know that I am doing the right thing. I have tried everything to lose the weight on my own. I will continue to lose the weight on my own but I will also be getting a tool to help me with the process. Recovery is going to be long and I’m not sure if I will blog daily after surgery of only every few days but I will try to post some sort of post on my facebook page once I’m out of the hospital.

I’m not sure how long I will be in the hospital as there are certain criteria’s to meet before being discharge. But I will keep you updated as much as I can.

Now let’s talk about this pre op diet. It is one tough diet to stay on. I know it’s to shrink my liver and for my health but darn I am missing garlic and onions. Today is day 17 on the pre op diet and I will survive this phase but I also look forward in a few months to eating things like tomatoes and cucumbers and avocados.

Well for now I’m off to figure out what book I’m packing for my hospital stay and  what series I’m going to start on Netflix.

I have a surgery date

Ok so I found out last Thursday that I will be having my surgery on January 28th! I am so so excited to start this chapter of my life. I have struggled with my weight most of my life. I am ready to get my health back. Yes it will be a lot of work even with the surgery. Yes I will have about 6 weeks of recovery time. Yes it’s going to hurt like crazy but it will be worth it. It will be worth spending extra years playing with the kids. It will be worth hopefully teaching my children healthy habits like working out as a family. But today let’s talk about the pre op diet.

I’ve been on the pre op diet since Friday. I have a love hate relationship with the pre op diet. Everything on my diet I like to eat except maybe the oatmeal. I eat the oatmeal cause it’s healthy and I have to but it’s not my favourite food. The thing that’s hard about the pre op diet is that I need to eat the same foods day in and day out until my surgery. I miss the variety of fruits and veggies in my diet. Here’s a list of what I can eat during a day. This is not meant as a meal plan for anyone this is being done under the close watch of my dietician and I recommend you talk to your doctor before trying this diet. I also won’t be putting the portions I can eat as again this was tailor made for my needs.

Ok so here’s the list

oatmeal

blueberries or strawberries

almonds

low fat greek yogurt

fat free yogurt

chicken

mixed leafy green

cauliflower

broccoli

mushrooms

light salad dressing or a tiny amount of oil

apple

celery

I miss carrots and peppers and tomatoes and asparagus and so many other fruits and veggies. But the think I miss the most is Avocado! The delicious buttery taste of avocado but one day I will be able to eat these foods again and it’s worth the temporary lack of variety.

What foods would you miss most if your diet was this limited?

Sewing

As a plus size woman I have had my issues finding clothing that I like and that fit. More times then not you would forfeit fashion for proper fit. So I decided that was no longer an option for me. I’m buying patterns and making my own clothing!

I will add pictures of what I make myself on my facebook page as well on on here 🙂

Here’t to never buying something you truly don’t love!

Fitness magazines

You know I have a love hate relationship with my fitness magazines. I love them most of the time but there are things that just get under my skin.  And all weight loss/fitness magazines have done it.

At certain times of the year and close to summer these fitness magazines come out with these unrealistic articles. Lose 10 lbs in ten days, get beach ready in a week, get the best ass in seven days without dieting. The list goes on and on. I would add links to the articles but I in no way support them so I won’t.

Here’s why it pisses me off. For years I have been working hard at maintaining and losing my weight. I didn’t do it in ten days. When I was first starting on this weight loss journey these articles were the cause of many starve and binge episodes. It sets you up for an unrealistic expectation and when you can achieve it as per the article you feel like a failure.

Here’s the facts a healthy weight loss is between 1-2 lns a week not 10.

You will lose weight by watching what you put into your body.

You can’t out work a bad diet, you can be in the gym for 2-3 hours at a time if your not fueling your body properly you won’t lose an ounce of weight.

Another thing we need to realize is that magazines are just like tv. On tv people watch the reality shows and the dramas to get into the shows. Fitness magazines draw you in with the catchy titles of the articles within. You know that saying sex sells well so does unrealistic diet plans. The weight loss industry actually makes millions of dollars off of people trying to lose weight by selling us these quick fix fad diets that never really last.

So the next time you read an article and are tempted to go full throttle on this new diet make sure that it’s a realistic and sustainable plan. Don’t let them fool you.
